The Mum cardigan

The Mum cardigan was created for my best friend, who happens to also be my sister.
The name comes from what my children started calling my sister once they were born. My oldest randomly called her Mum one day and it’s stuck since then, I rarely even call her, her real name anymore. Mum, feels “right”.
The Mum was creating using yarn from Skein and the Stitch located in the UK. It’s their collection called The Hobbit, which was an advent for 2023, yarn type is Non-Super Wash Merino Wool. My sister has always loved The Lord of the Rings, and while The Hobbit isn’t the same book, it’s the same universe so I decided it was close enough.

The Mum took over 6 months to create, while I received the yarn in the summer 2024, deciding on what to create took me awhile to figure out. I couldn’t decide if I wanted to do my normal blankets, or try something different this time. I ultimately let my sister decide. Once she chose cardigan it wasn’t hard to begin working on it. I tried a few different crochet squares randomly, and found the patterns I liked most.
The Mum uses the traditional granny square pattern in rows of 5, a few of the squares rotating different skein colors, and another pattern using the FPDC (Front Post Double Crochet) technique. The FPDS technique does use a tad more yarn, and it takes longer to work up, so there are not very many of these worked in. However, they are gorgeous and definitely stand out, especially when you use contrasting colorways.
All yarn created in this cardigan is 100% Merino wool, the joining yarn is Shire Heather from Knitpicks, I used a total of 10 50g skeins. The border yarn used is also from Knitpicks, Merlot Heather, using only about 2 full 50g skeins.

I did use a 4.5 mm crochet hook throughout this entire project.

I do not have an official pattern written out for this project. I have never written one before but it is on my 2025 bucket list. If you’re wanting to create something similar to The Mum, I’m more than happy to answer questions to help you create your own.
